What to do if you suspect child abuse

If you suspect that a child is being abused or neglected, it’s important that you do something about it. You don’t want to later find out that the child had been injured or killed while adults failed to step in. But what steps should you take? It depends on your relationship with the child.

In an emergency situation where you see a child being actively attacked, left home alone, or in a dangerous situation, call 9-1-1 immediately and give as many details as possible.

In other situations, where you may only suspect abuse, you’ll need to call County Children Services. Before you call, you might want to write down your concerns so you’ll be able to clearly explain the issues to the people on the other end.

Scioto County Children Services offers a 24-hour intake line to field your calls and they are required by law to investigate all complaints.

You can either call 740-456-4164 or visit their offices at 3940 Gallia Street in New Boston.

If you suspect your child is being abused by a caregiver, family member, or acquaintance, immediately cut off all contact between that person and the child until you’re able to confirm or disprove your suspicions. If there are physical injuries, take pictures and then take your child to the doctor to be examined for injuries ASAP. If there are signs of physical or sexual abuse, the doctor can assist you in contacting authorities. Help and advice is also available at the Child Help National Hotline by calling 1-800-4-A-CHILD (1-800-422-4453).
