I’m not sure which of these Portsmouth Police calls is the weirdest: A man threatened to shoot a woman over socks, a guy broke into a car to leave stuff behind, and when police responded to a report of a man and woman fighting, they found… well, you’ll just have to read it to find out.  These crazy calls are just some of the highlights from Tuesday’s PPD log.  We’ll break them down.

Portsmouth Police Reports: Child in Danger

May 29, 2021

Socks and Shooting Threats

A Gallia Street man called police at 1:29 am to report a problem with an unwanted guest. He told police a woman showed up and refused to leave.

She told police she just wanted some of her socks and that the man threatened to shoot her. As a bit of background, this pair is constantly calling police to mediate their personal disputes.

While officers read Miranda rights to the man, they determined the argument was verbal. The woman agreed to leave. They advised her to return during daylight hours with an officer to collect her belongings.

Shots Fired?

Officers answered a call to Offnere Street just before 2 pm. A caller thought they heard gunfire and saw a strange guy on a black bike.

Police responded to the scene but didn’t see anyone.

7th Street Attack Reported

At 2:47 am, a caller told police a man had attacked her on 7th Street. When officers responded to the scene she said nothing physical happened, she just wanted him to stay away from her. Both parties agreed to head back to their homes.

That’s Not My Bag

With the string of recent car break-ins in Portsmouth, it’s no surprise an Auburn Avenue caller was worried when he saw a man on video hanging around his car around 8 am.

Video showed the man attempting to get into the car. But instead of taking stuff, he left a black bag.  Police said the bag contained clothing, a bottle opener, a pocket knife, the tip of a vape pen, and other items.

An officer impounded the bag and items.

Porch Pirate

A High Street caller reported a porch pirate who lives right next door. She told police the woman keeps taking items from her porch and was spotted on her property earlier in the day.

Assault In Progress

A woman called police at 3 pm to report a man assaulting another man at a 17th Street address. She said she was on the phone while it happened.

Police took a man into custody.

Dangerous Situation

Officers responded to a request for a welfare check at a 12th Street home at 4 pm. The landlord said there is an issue with the gas line. A maintenance man made several attempts to fix it, but no one was home.

Further, the woman was seen with a black eye a few weeks ago and her landlord is concerned she hasn’t been seen since. There was no answer at the residence.

Under The Influence

Officers responded to a report of an overdose in a vehicle at the Dollar General on Gallia. Paramedics treated the woman and her husband came to the scene to take her home.

The Kids Are All Right

  • The Highland County Sheriff’s Office asked police to check on a juvenile. A worried woman reported the child’s mom picked it up from her house at 3 am but later texted her asking where the child was.  She then told the woman she was ‘in hiding.’ She also said the woman sent some strange texts. Officers said they made contact with mother and daughter and both were fine.
  • At 5:20 pm, police responded to Timmonds Avenue for a report of kids breaking glass in a driveway. Officers spoke to the kids and their parents.
  • A mom reported that a child who wasn’t supposed to go anywhere left in a vehicle with a friend at about 5:45 pm. The child returned home around 6:30 pm. Police advised the mother on how to file for juvenile delinquency if the bad behavior persists.

Just Playing Around

AT 7:35 pm, a caller reported a man and woman physically assaulting each other on High Street. She said she could see them hitting each other through the window.

When police arrived, the pair told them they’d gotten a Wii for Christmas and were playing a boxing game.
