Scioto County Teens Stay Social Under Quarantine
In the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic, Ohio teens are home on an “extended spring break” for the next three weeks, and this has made it difficult for many students to stay in touch with each other. Social media has made it easier for teens to communicate outside of school, but some high schoolers are still craving large group interaction, and a group of students from Scioto County is doing their best to solve this social withdrawal.
The Scioto County Student Leadership Association (SCSLA) is a group of students from schools all over the county dedicated to addressing issues facing teens in this area. The chair of the association, Gary Jenkins, developed the idea of an “online party” that students could attend from their homes.
After testing out a few different online communication platforms, the SCSLA decided on using Discord, an application that allows users to create “servers” that people can join. There is no limit on how many people can be on a server, which made it perfect for the SCSLA’s new server.
The Scioto County Students Discord Server will allow students to send each other text messages or join voice calls with each other to stay in contact. The SCSLA is planning a large kickoff event to launch its new server on Saturday, March 21st at 8:00 P.M.
