“Normally at this time of year, I’m asking residents to sign my petition to get my name back on the ballot for City Council.

My term as Mayor/Third Ward Councilman will end this year and after much thought and lots of prayer, I’ve decided not to seek Re-election. I put this on social media today because I’d like to strongly encourage anyone with a desire to serve their city, has the available time, and wants to see our City to continue to move forward in a positive way, and meets eligibility requirements of the City Charter, Please consider this position. The filing deadline is 2-2-21 and petitions may be picked up at the Board of Elections.

I’m looking forward to continuing to serve through 2021 and will cheer on the next Council Representative. It’s a great honor to serve our City.”

Members of the community offered many expressions of support and gratitude for his many years of service.

  • Thank you for your service to our community Mr. Mayor!
  • Thank you for your many years of dedicated service to the City of Portsmouth Mr. Mayor (Captain) Kevin E.!
  • Hard decisions!!! Thanks for your service to our beloved Portsmouth
  • You have served our city well! Thank you!

Mayor Johnson has had a long career in the public. He was the “Go-To” radio personality that took so many through the high school years. “The Captain” was an ever-present voice on the radio in our first car while cruising on Chillicothe Street.

During his years in public office, Mayor Johnson wasn’t shy about his Christian faith and how that conviction influenced his decisions.

While this chapter of his life comes to a close, he continues to serve on community boards that will help shape the health and safety of our citizens.
