Officer Injured Chasing Suspect

A Portsmouth, Ohio police officer was injured while chasing a suspect and a jail inmate said his mom stole his truck.  We break down the highlights from the Portsmouth Police Chief’s Daily Briefing.

Hit and Run

A Portsmouth woman was arrested for a hit and run after initially trying to claim her vehicle was stolen.

Portsmouth Police Reports: Child in Danger

Just before 1 am, police responded to a report of an accident at Coles Blvd and Sheridan Road. Witnesses said a woman in a gray Dodge hit something in the area and then fled the scene on foot.

Police checked the home address for the owner and notified the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office to be on the lookout for the suspect.

At 1:14 am, the owner called the police to report her vehicle missing. Police picked her up and took her to the crash scene where they took her into custody.

They arranged for the vehicle to be towed but first allowed the woman’s boyfriend to remove a car seat. They took her to the station to book her and then released her to her boyfriend.

Rehab Runaway

At 2:30 am, a man called the police to report his girlfriend missing from SOMC.

The woman was in court-ordered rehab in Franklin Furnace and obtained a medical conditional release to go to the hospital.

When he went to the hospital to pick her up, she’d already left. Police told him, he needed to come into the station to give a report.

Trashy Behavior

A 20th Street caller reported a suspicious man in the alley just after 4 am. The witness said the man went through the trash and threw things on the ground from trash bags.

When officers responded to the scene, they noted several trash cans dumped out in the alley. However, they could not locate the suspect.

Hey! That’s My Stuff

  • At 6:35 am, officers received a report of vehicle break-ins at the Holiday Inn on 2nd.  Thieves broke into trucks belonging to AEP.
  • Police received a report from Gallia Street of a vehicle break-in at 9:39 am. They took information for a report.
  • At 10:40 am, a Kendall Avenue caller reported a catalytic converter cut off a jeep.
  • Fifteen minutes later, a Hudson House resident reported a missing catalytic converter.
  • A 6th Street mom reported her children’s bicycles stolen at 5:29 pm. She asked for extra patrols in the area.
  • A Gallia Street man contacted police at 6:30 pm to say he caught catalytic converter thieves in the act. The suspects jacked up one of his vehicles and left the scene. He asked for extra patrols.
  • Speedway employees reported a man took Pop-Tarts into the bathroom and left the building at 10:40 pm. Half an hour later, he came back and took more items to the bathroom. Police took information for a report.

This Property is Condemned

Police assisted the Health Department just after 9 am on High Street. They told people staying in a condemned house with no water or electric that it was time to leave.

One of the men had a warrant, but the Scioto County Jail refused to accept him. Police also cited two junk vehicles behind the home.

Officer Injured In Chase

At 9:48 am, officers responded to a report of a suspicious man. Witnesses said a man in a blue hoodie loitered in the area of Logan and Hutchins for several hours.

The man took off when the police arrived. PPD gave chase on foot. An officer was injured when he fell during the chase.

The chase ended when an officer TASERED the suspect. Police took the man into custody.

Mom Stole My Car

An inmate at the Scioto County Jail contacted police at 1 pm to file a complaint about his mother.

He claimed his mom forged the title to his vehicle and took it out of impound. The man claimed she stole other things as well.

Officers took information for a report.

Traffic Tale

Citizens flagged down officers at Jenkins Sunoco on Gallia at 3:10 pm. A man drove into the barricades in the parking lot and got stuck in the rope.

He claimed he was followed and harassed by another driver and drove into the barricades while attempting to get away.

Witnesses did see another vehicle turn around in the lot but they didn’t see the original incident. Employees checked the station’s security footage but it did not show the original incident.

Police took information for a report.

Pizza Driver Threatened With Knife

Police responded to Thomas Avenue for a report of a delivery driver threatened with a knife at 4:27 pm.

A woman delivering pizza told police a freckled man in a dark hoodie threatened her with a knife. Police searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect.

Under The Influence

  • At 8:16 pm, a 7th Street caller contacted police to report a possibly high woman who refused to leave their home. The residents didn’t know what to do with the woman. The woman agreed to leave and go to a hotel.
  • Police received a report of an overdose on Jackson Avenue at 10:25 pm.  People at the residence told EMS they did not need medical assistance.
  • Officers responded to a report of a drunk man refusing to leave Frank & Steins Lounge at 10:36 pm. Someone picked the man up.
  • Callers reported a possibly overdosed man lying in front of Speedway on Gallia at 10:38 pm. Police found the man sitting on the curb. He said he was just cold. The man told officers he planned to get a room at the Royal Inn.
  • Police responded to a report of a drunk man near Portsmouth Ambulance on Gallia at 11:20 pm. An officer transported the man to a friend’s house.
