Portsmouth Police Officers busted a man with a long arrest record, who is also currently on probation, after a smash and grab robbery on Waller.
At 11:30 am, officers responded to the Schmidt Family Restaurant Group for a report that a man smashed the window of a company vehicle. The vehicle had only been parked for about three minutes when a man smashed out a passenger door window and took a bag containing multiple Craftsman tools, including:
- angle grinder
- cordless oscillating tool
- charger battery
- bitset
- 70-piece mechanic toolset
Officers caught up with James Sonny Cook, who has a long arrest record and has been the subject of multiple suspicious activity complaints recently.
Police found him hiding behind a maintenance building. The bag full of tools was located nearby, photographed, and returned to its rightful owner.
Police arrested Cook for the 30th time on charges of theft and probation violation. The Ohio State Patrol arrested Cook back in February for DUI, domestic violence, failure to comply, and a probation violation. He was released from jail on March 14.
Additionally, officers arrested Cook for a probation violation back in October, and he spent 24 days in jail. In February of last year, Cook spent 12 days in jail for a parole violation.
Cook received a recognizance bond on the theft charge, but he’s still in the Scioto County Jail due to a probation hold.
