Portsmouth Police Reports: Child in Danger

May 29, 2021

An officer went to check out the vehicle just after 8:38 am. Police agreed to wait an hour to have the vehicle towed, so construction workers could get up the hill to work.

In that hour, the vehicle slid off the edge of the cliff to an alley east of High Street. The vehicle was towed and police impounded the title for safekeeping.

Woman Steals Mom’s Wedding Ring

A Robinson Avenue woman admitted to police that she stole a wedding ring set from her mother. At 10:47 am, police issued a citation and summons for theft.

The Scioto County Sheriff’s Office also served her with a bench warrant. She was released on her own recognizance.

  • A Bertha Avenue resident reported another case of a false unemployment claim at 2:32 pm.

Alarming Situation

Officers responded to a used car lot on the Scioto Trail for a report of a car alarm that keeps going off on one of the vehicles.

The caller said she’d spoken to the business owner several times to no avail. Officers spoke to him and he fixed the problem.

Suspicious Activity

A Gallia Street caller reported someone coughing inside a dumpster by the basketball courts just after noon. Police found a man dumpster diving and sent him on his way.

Workers at the Family Dollar on Gallia reported a woman lying on the floor and digging underneath shelves. They said she’d been in the store for three hours. The woman told an officer she thought she lost her debit card. The officer felt she might have other issues.

A pest control worker discovered a body inside a Summit Street home just before 1 pm.  Five units responded to the scene.

Officers contacted the coroner. The body was transported to a crematorium.

Return of the Naked Guy

At 4:12 pm, a caller reported a naked man in the dumpster behind Lighting Lube. Officers could not locate the man but they believed it to be the same naked guy they chased the previous day.

At 4:35, another caller reported a shirtless, apparently high man near Bob & Floyd. Officers caught up with the man who promised he was going to lay down behind the levee and not come back out until the next day. He apologized for being a nuisance to society.

Man in Crisis

Officers received a report from a crisis center that an unstable man left the premises. A few minutes later, he attempted to break into the Children’s Learning Center on 2nd Street.

At 9:54 pm, he went in OSCO, grabbed a metal pipe, and fled the building.  Officers could not locate him.

Gun Pulled During Custody Argument

Just after 9 pm, a mom called the police regarding a custody issue. Her babysitter had to go to the hospital, so she left the woman’s child with its father. She was at his residence attempting to pick up the child and no one answered the door.

At 9:36 pm, a woman called and claimed the mother hit her and she wanted to press charges.

The mom said when she went to pick up her daughter, she got into a fistfight with the child’s father’s girlfriend. She also claimed her ex pulled a gun on her.
