A big drug bust in Greenup County, Kentucky. Law enforcement officers arrested a Wurtland couple with half a pound of meth and thousands of dollars in cash on Monday. Let’s check out what happened.

Officials said it all started when Sheriff Matt Smith made a traffic stop on Kentucky State Route 503. He must have suspected something was up because a deputy was called for assistance.

Officers conducted a search of the vehicle and discovered illegal drugs and arrested several people as a result.  According to Sheriff Matt Smith, investigators learned where the drugs were purchased. That’s when he decided to obtain a search warrant.

Once officers from the Greenup County Sheriff’s Office had the warrant in hand, they teamed up with Northeast Kentucky High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas team, the Ashland Police Department SWAT team and officers from Commonweath Attorney Melvin Leonhart’s office to check out the location on Chapman Road in Wurtland.

Here’s what police found at the home:

  • Multiple hand guns
  • A long gun
  • several ounces of marijuana
  • around half a pound of crystal ice methamphetamine
  • digital scales
  • drug paraphernalia
  • several thousand dollars in cash

Working Together

Smith

Sheriff Matt Smith made a point to thank the other police agencies that joined forces with his officers on the case.  “This is the kind of case that can be done when agencies work together and one agency is not concerned about who gets the credit. Let’s work together to get the drugs and bad guys off the streets for a better community.”
