George Harry Bishop, 73 of West Portsmouth passed unexpectedly Tuesday, May 4, 2021, at Southern Ohio Medical Center. He was born April 27, 1948, in Portsmouth to the late Harry Edward Bishop and Juanita P. Mannarino. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Bishop, and a grandson, Connor D. Walker.
George was a 1967 graduate of Portsmouth High School, a United States Navy Veteran serving 4 years on the USS Hawkins and USS Orion, and a member of the Evangelical United Church of Christ. He worked as a police officer for 25 years at the former Portsmouth Receiving Hospital and later retired in 2003 from Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. He loved watching many sports and was an avid fan of Ohio sports. He was a faithful, loving, and supportive husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. One of his favorite sayings when being told goodbye or asking for help was “Good Lord willing and the creeks don’t rise.”
George is survived by his wife, Meddie Carolyn Kitts Bishop whom he married August 25, 1973, in Grayson, Kentucky, a daughter, Dawn R. (Mark) Myers Walker, 2 sons; George H. (Stephanie) Bishop II and James A. (Sherri) Bishop, 10 grandchildren; Jacob and Ethan Bishop, Peyton and Shawna Walker, Cranston and Creighton Bryant, Froylan (Brooke) and Hailee Corona, Jessica (Zack) and Lacey Waller, 2 great-grandchildren; Kindred and Froylan Corona Jr., 2 brothers; David (Carol) Wright and Michael (Becky) Mannarino, a sister, Claudia (Jeff) Burchett, 3 sisters-in-law; Joyce Rickey, Frances Leguire, and Jane Kitts, along with many special nieces, nephews, and his beloved pets; Sophie, Zoey, and Cardi.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth with Ryan Brown officiating. Interment will be in Scioto Burial Park with Military graveside rites performed by the James Dickey Post 23 American Legion.
