Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron announced a federal grand jury has indicted former Greenup Sheriff Keith Cooper, 68, for mail fraud and theft from a federally funded agency.
According to the indictment, Cooper obtained over $50,000 in cash from early 2013 to March 2017 by making withdrawals and failing to deposit the money into a law enforcement account.
Additionally, the indictment alleges that Cooper asked Deputy Sheriffs to purchase ammunition that did not match firearms issued to them for official duties, then relocated multiple boxes of the ammunition to his home.
Cooper is charged with unlawfully keeping approximately 35,000 rounds of ammunition, worth approximately $30,000, that he bought with public funds. Cooper was also accused of taking several personal out-of-state trips using a vehicle and fuel purchased with County funds, according to the indictment.
Cooper has not yet been scheduled to appear in court in the Eastern District of Kentucky. He could get up to 20 years in prison for mail fraud and 10 years for theft of public funds. The fine is up to $250,000.
