Considerations When Buying a Used Cargo Van
ShareTweetEmail

You’ve studied the internet to find a work vehicle that suits your needs. Finally, you’ve made your decision. A cargo van is your vehicle of choice. The market is overflowing with used cargo vans right now, and while it will take some searching, a pristine cargo van can be found at a fraction of the sticker price. So, before you buy, here are some considerations when buying a used cargo van that could be your best bet.

Know the Cargo

You can go for a shorter van if you plan on doing a lot of city driving. They are quicker, not challenging to drive, and very maneuverable in narrow alleys. If you regularly want to haul long objects, consider an extended wheel-base model that offers more cargo space. Ask the previous owner what they carried in the van and what their experience was.

The Doors Matter

Some vans come with dual side doors, meaning there is a sliding door on each side. Dutch doors are for the back doors that both open to one side. This allows you to have full access to the cargo. Finally, you might come across a lift gate similar to the tailgate of a pickup truck. Not only should you buy the right doors for the preferred accessibility for your van, make sure they are sturdy and still hang well, and lock easily. And all windows should work after the previous owner’s wear and tear.

Powertrain

The most significant distinction between large and small cargo vans is the powertrain. Small cargo vans come with small powertrains. That means better gas mileage, but they can’t haul nearly as much as a larger powertrain on a larger cargo van. The downside of a larger cargo van is, of course, decreased gas mileage. When you test drive the vehicle, ask about how much the vehicle has ever towed and over what distances. Were there any issues with the vehicle after that trip?

Equipment

Some features are great for a cargo van. They come with all manners of accessories to help contain their size in a few ways, and you’ll want to be on the outlook for such features. If you need an extended van, does it have parking assistance? Is the van equipped adequately with drawers, shelves, hooks, and other accessories to maximize the cargo space? Buying a fully accessorized used work van is a bonus. Keep a special eye out for these. You could really save yourself a buck.

A used cargo van could be an excellent value for your business. There are lots of fully equipped vans on the market for you to choose from. But, do not pay for extra features that you don’t need. However, spend your money where it counts the most on features you actually need to maximize the efficiency of your van. We hope these considerations when buying a used cargo van have helped you come closer to your next work vehicle buying decision.
