Colleen Pelfrey – Smoot, 91, of Portsmouth passed away Saturday, May 8, 2021, at her home. She was born to the late Bent and Clara Bell (Milam) Banks on March 15, 1930, in Hazard, KY. in 1988 Colleen started a group home she owned and operated until her death. The group home allowed her to fulfill her mission to care for those in need. She was a member of Mt. Zion Apostolic Church and believed in the Apostle’s doctrine. She loved to fish, cook and spend time with her grandchildren.
Colleen is survived by four sons, Dennis Pelfrey and wife Janice of Sciotoville; Ronnie Pelfrey of Portsmouth, Paul Pelfrey of Portsmouth, Steve Shepherd of Sciotoville; three daughters, Donna Staggs and Husband Pat of Portsmouth, Tamara Pelfrey of North Carolina, Paula Hall and husband John Jr. of Portsmouth; one brother, Gary Banks of Hindman, KY, one sister, Shirley Picklesimer of Washington; 20 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years Raymond Pelphrey, and her second husband, Grandville “Bud” Smoot and a son, Michael Pelfrey.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 14, 2021, at D.W. SWICK FUNERAL HOME in New Boston with brother Monty Craft officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Franklin Furnace. Friends may call Friday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
