Car Parts That Require Annual Maintenance
ShareTweetEmail

We know all about scheduled oil changes, and everyone knows that even the best tires wear out. But you might overlook many more moving parts that could use repairs and replacements. Continue reading to learn about car parts that require annual maintenance. Keep these on your to-do list each year.

Turbocharger

If your car is outfitted with a turbocharger, which turns engine exhaust into additional power, congratulations. You’re enjoying an engine that doesn’t just get you moving faster, but makes the world a little greener, too—sending that exhaust back in keeps some toxic emissions out of the atmosphere. Turbochargers work hard, which means they can wear themselves out. When that happens, you can tell. Keep your engine at peak performance by seeking out a qualified repair shop. Not all cars have turbochargers, which means that not all mechanics can service your car. The relative rarity of this part could send you on a bit of a search for the right professionals, but considering what your turbo can do, it’s a worthy journey.

Brakes

Even if you don’t make a habit of slamming the brakes, brake pads still wear out over time. When you drive on worn-out brake pads, the hot, metal-on-metal friction can do real damage to your brake rotors. You never want to drive with failing brakes. If you can hear metallic grinding as you brake, that’s a loud and clear warning sign to replace your brake pads as soon as possible.

Wiper Blades

In the Midwest, where we’re no strangers to frequent rain, windshield wiper blades get more than their fair share of use. As with any moving part, friction wears wiper blades down, and as time goes by, the blades lose their efficacy. When they fail to clear precipitation from your windshield, driving in inclement weather becomes almost impossible. Fortunately, unlike car parts that require annual maintenance from your mechanic, replacing the wiper blades is a quick fix that you can do in the comfort of your own garage—just remember to do so every year.
