A troubling report of animal abuse in Franklin Furnace. Just before 6 pm, a caller reported someone locked dogs in cages inside a house and abandoned them.
The Scioto County Sheriff’s Office contacted the dog warden who responded to the scene.
Deputies spoke to a woman on the scene who said she was the daughter of the dog owner. She gave permission for the dog warden to take the animals.
Misfits Paws Rescue and the Scioto Area Humane Agency stepped in to assist with the 11 dogs and 2 cats found on the scene at the time.
Misfits Paws Rescue described the cages as cramped and nasty. The dogs were emaciated, some weighing as little as 2 lbs. Deputies assisted in removing 11 dogs and two cats from the scene.
A vet visit confirmed the dogs were dehydrated and emaciated. Three were admitted to the hospital, and seven required medications.
The cats appeared to be in better shape, but deputies learned one of their feline siblings was left behind.
The Sheriff’s Office responded to a request to accompany an animal rescue worker back to the home so she could set a trap in order to rescue the last remaining cat from the home.
When the deputy and worker arrived at the scene, they discovered the door of the home was left open to allow the worker to set the trap for the cat.
Misfits Paws Rescue is currently raising funds for care for the animals. They said they’d racked up $1000 in vet bills in just one day with more treatment needed.
