Originally built in 1917, the Sciotoville Bridge stands strong as a landmark of the Southern Ohio railway system to this day. In this video, a man flies over the bridge to give a bird’s eye view of the landmark piece of engineering.
The main purpose of the bridge was to allow Kentucky and West Virginia merchants an easier route to access Ohio and the Great Lakes. When the bridge was originally built, the bridge was 3,400 feet long, making it the longest riveted truss bridge in the entire world at that point. It held this record until it was beaten out in 1945.
The Sciotoville Bridge is used by Norfolk and Western Railway to ship their goods through the area and to connect to the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. The highest point of the bridge towers 236 feet over the Ohio River.
The director of the building of the bridge was named Gustav Lindenthal, who is famous for designing the Hell Gate Bridge in New York City. Lindenthal prided himself on engineering that not only served its purpose, but was also pleasing to the eye, and the Sciotoville Bridge is clearly not an exception to that goal.
