1. Nameless, Texas

Nameless, the best ironic name for a town if ever there was one! Texas is known for its interesting town names like Rising Star, Muleshoe, and Round Rock. However, Nameless beats all of them when it comes to naming a town. The story goes that in the 1880s, as a community started in the area, they decided to apply for a post office of their own.

As the community came up with names to call their town and post office, all six of their suggested names were rejected. After being frustrated with the repeated rejections, they suggested it be “Nameless.” As luck would have it, it got approved.

Today, while Nameless, Texas still exists, only the schoolhouse and its cemetery are all that remains.

2. Broke, New South Wales

This small town with approximately 292 residents in Australia is not a town full of broke people. The town has a small wine production and coal mines that prop up their local economy.

The town was named after the surveyor general’s English friend who had the unfortunate last name of Broke.

3. Misery, Somme

This town wasn’t named so because the people who resided in this French town were miserable. Instead, the French word “miserie” means poverty. While Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables characters experience hardship due to their impoverished state, the 137 residents of Misery thankfully do not.

4. Devil Town, Ohio

It was once called “Tannersville” because of the tannery that provided the majority of jobs in the area. However, it became more known for Devil Town. One legend has it that a resident used devil a lot when referring to the town. Another legend has it that the town name came from the tannery workers who, once when they’re drunk, became devils in their behavior.

5. Friday, Texas

Do you always long for Friday to come around? Maybe you wouldn’t anymore when you reside in Friday, Texas. It was first named Ellis Prairie after the man who received the grant to the land and built a community there in 1839.

When the community applied for a post office in 1903, the town was renamed as Friday. Today, around 99 people still live in the town.

We couldn’t stop with 5. Here are some honorable mentions.
